What is the current rate on buying music? Very low, sadly. But if you have one song that is recommended to me by one of my Spotify-friends, I'll listen to it, maybe even listen to it. Say I didn't like it that much, but enough to listen to it three times, and so did everyone else on my friend's friendlist. That's a couple of thousand listens. Then multiply by the amount of people on Facebook. THEN posit you have a popular song. The "1 million streams" of Poker Face sounds ridiculously low - a song of that magnitude would have several million people listening to it 20,30, several 100 times - but should by the figures you relate have netted her 0,0013 x 1,000,000 = $1300, not $167. Then, add to that the fact that Lady Gaga, per your article, likely has a better deal than the Sam Rosenthal. Then posit that Poker Face likely has been streamed AT LEAST a hundred million times on Spotify - I think we can agree that just the 1 million Swedes with Spotify probably streamed this song on average at least 100 times, considering what a hit it was (I know I have streamed it at least that many times at parties, and I'm NOT a Lady Gaga fan). That's $130.000 to Lady Gaga, for one hit. Then add on the fact that Spotify is now much bigger than Sweden. When Spotify reaches, say, 100million users, a hit will automatically net the artist several million dollars - from ONE song. And that's the independent musician. Say Sam had had one break-out hit today, when Spotify's user-base stands at 10 million users (actually a lot more, those are figures from last year). They all listen to it just five times (on average - some listen to it more, some don't listen at all). He'd have pocketed $75.000 for that one single, and that's a low estimate. He'd also have created a fan-base, and those who really liked it would have listened to at least 1 or more of his other works. They'd also go to his concerts.

No, the way I see it, getting paid slightly more than one 100th for someone LISTENING to your song, rather than buying it FOREVER, seems downright generous.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02220461436839728014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9046308099405720077.post-82947652524175917942012-04-03T10:10:02.692-07:002012-04-03T10:10:02.692-07:00Great Article, JP!
